The Arts Center at Duck Creek is pleased to present Three Painters at Duck Creek, curated by Hiroyuki Hamada, opening on August 8 and on view through August 30. This exhibition will feature paintings by artists Eric Banks, Elliott Green, and Sean Sullivan, all of whom currently reside in the Hudson Valley. Mr. Hamada interviewed each artist in advance of the show and these texts will be made available on our website.

Hamada was inspired to curate a group exhibition at Duck Creek after installing an exhibit of his own works there in 2019. “After closely observing the nature of the barn through hanging my own show and documenting multiple shows by others, I started to wonder what sort of work would flourish in the space. I’ve been accustomed to this sort of mental practice as I have served on various panels at arts organizations over the years. To do well in the barn, the work must have a strong presence to withstand the overwhelming character of the space itself. The work must sit well with the historical significance of the barn once being a gathering place for prominent abstract expressionists. The work must be able to harmoniously coexist with the natural elements on the grounds. The work must be able to reach to the hearts and souls of the community members.” - Hiroyuki Hamada

Eric Banks’s paintings are arrived at through an intuitive and constantly evolving and persistent process often leading to thick and turgid surfaces. As if to capture a shapeless something with the diligence of a seasoned farmer, he succeeds in putting life in his exquisitely painted surfaces. Sean Sullivan allows whispers and presences of the unknown to occupy his marks as he lays out his visual dialogue in his unique process--which sits right between print making and painting. His touch somehow extends beyond our time and space. Elliott Green’s paint-scape allows us to see how we the human species struggle to merge with nature in a complex path of harmony, conflict, contradiction, surprise and profound awe.”
